COMPASS GLASS
Compass Glass Ltd is celebrating 30 years of trading and a lot has happened in that time! The company is well known for being able to offer bespoke, structural glazing solutions including any metal support structures to suit most requirements and over the years has been involved in many prestigious and challenging projects. In 2014 the superb Sunvista, minimally framed sliding door system was introduced to complement the range of products already offered and the success has been incredible.
Frameless glass structures can now incorporate virtually frameless glass doors.
Cowdown Farm in Micheldever was an extremely hi-tech development designed by Architects Spence Harris Hogan (SHH) which housed a unique collection of vintage cars and also provided private space. The glazed link consisted of frameless structural glazing with strategically placed Sunvista doors providing access in and out.
The Bratton Hill House project overlooking the fields of Glastonbury was developed in conjunction with architects Studio Mark Ruthven and structural engineers Glass and Light Structures. This involved creating a thermally efficient glazed extension with as little support as possible. A single Sunvista sliding door provides access into the structure.
Most glass structures require, at least, a small amount of metal support, alternatively the support can form part of the architectural design.
The Step House in Hampstead was designed by architects Bureau de Change. The glass facets which also stepped at the head were invisibly fixed, structural double glazed units with narrow, bespoke, insulated aluminium returns. One of the sets of Sunvista doors installed on this project can be seen in the background.
On the Charterhouse Square, London project the bespoke, laser cut, powder coated, 12mm thick steel supports not only provided the structural support for the glass it also formed part of architect Gibson Thornley’s aesthetic design on this up and over glass roof.
Roof lights can take many forms and make an incredible difference to a property allowing natural light to flood into a building.
The photo of the Casa del Sol roof light illustrates one of the many up and over roof lights that Compass Glass has installed over the years. Architect Sophie Nguyen can be very creative with her roof light designs in the way she introduces natural light and often installs Sunvista doors adjacent to them ensure that the maximum amount of light enters the building.
This example is a structurally bonded, high performance, double glazed, frameless roof above the impressive swimming pool in designed by Re-Format architects. The joint at the apex is frameless. The Sunvista doors and fixed glazing can be seen below.
The installation of very large panels of glass more than often frameless has formed part of the company’s core business since its inception.
AV Architects remodelled this oast house near Sevenoaks including the addition of this contemporary extension clad in frameless, glass over three floors including the lower ground, with many of the individual panels including the Sunvista doors each weighing in excess of 300kgs. A stunning addition.
This project in Abersoch was particularly challenging because of the location. White Box Architecture had specified a frameless, bespoke, top hung sliding door system involving some extremely wide panels that had to slide tangentially to suit the shape of the building and this is the result.

The British designed and manufactured Sunvista, minimally framed, sliding door system with its incredibly narrow 19mm wide profiles is manufactured in south west London by Compass Glass. It can be incorporated into any type of building, large or small. Sunvista can be as simple as a two panel system at the rear of a London town house creating a seamless connection with the garden, a three or four track system extending across the rear of a suburban property bringing the outside in or in larger properties, new build or even listed buildings where it can be a stunning addition. Fully opening corners can be introduced into large or small houses to create a fabulous effect and, if required, the panels can even slide into pockets to create more room. Sunvista can incorporate large areas of fixed glazing and form thermally efficient envelopes to penthouses or separate buildings.
